Gender Affirmation Before Clinic Visit

Gender-Affirming Top Surgery: Pre-Surgical Screening Guide

We are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all patients seeking gender-affirming top surgery. Because this is an elective procedure involving general anesthesia and tissue resection, we apply safety guidelines to ensure the best outcomes. Please review the requirements below to understand what is needed before scheduling a consultation:

Why These Requirements Matter

Top surgery involves general anesthesia and precise surgical planning. Our guidelines are designed to reduce the risk of complications, such as bleeding, infection, or delayed healing, and to ensure the safest experience possible.

Health Requirements

  • BMI must be 40 or below. This reduces the risk of complications with anesthesia, wound healing, and recovery.
  • All nicotine products must be stopped 6–8 weeks prior to surgery. This includes vaping, gum, patches, and smoking. A nicotine test will be performed.
  • Patients on blood thinners must obtain clearance from their prescribing physician and understand that bleeding risks are elevated during surgery.
  • Any cardiopulmonary conditions (e.g., asthma, heart failure, COPD) require clearance from a PCP, pulmonologist, or cardiologist.
  • History of stroke must be evaluated and cleared by a neurologist.
  • Severe or unstable psychiatric conditions should be fully managed before your surgical evaluation to ensure safe perioperative planning.

Meeting these criteria allows us to provide you with the best surgical outcome while prioritizing your safety. If you need assistance coordinating medical clearance or smoking cessation, we are here to help.
